As with your natural teeth, dental implants and the new teeth attached to them require a good home care routine and regular visits to the dentist and hygienist to keep them in good condition. Dental implants have a very high success rate (up to 98%) but do require stringent aftercare to maximise their chances of being successful. Your dentist will provide you with aftercare information following your implant treatment.
Dental implant placement is carried out either under local anaesthetic or intravenous sedation, depending on patient preference, so should not hurt. You may experience some minor swelling and discomfort for a few days after implant placement, which can in most cases be managed by over-the-counter pain relief. You will be provided with an aftercare pack that will include, a small course of antibiotics, an antibacterial mouthwash, pain killers, and all the instructions. In the majority of cases, implant patients report no problems and are able to return to their everyday activities the day after the implants were placed.
After your implants have been placed, we will see you for a follow-up appointment after one week to check everything is healing as expected. We will then see you again after three months, and at this appointment your dentist will check that your implants have bonded sufficiently with your bone before attaching your new teeth.
After this we will see you once a year for an implant health check, so we can assess the health of your gums, take updated photographs and x-rays to ensure your implants are in a healthy condition, professionally clean around your implants, and to review your oral hygiene techniques to ensure the highest level of health of your implants.
